Waters takes first Midget win

Jimmy Waters had won in almost every class possible at Rocky Mountain Raceways except the Focus Midgets. That is until last Saturday. In just his third try in a Focus Midget, multi time Sprint Car champion Waters gave Jeff Kelley his first midget victory - as a car owner. Waters started on the inside if row 3 of the 13 car field after qualifying 2nd. A first lap caution was triggered by Powell making contact with Chuck Groat, spinning Groat. 2007 Champion Tim Savage was collected and had to be towed from the track with a destroyed front axle. On lap,4, after nearly hitting the wall, Waters was back to 7th place but began mounting his charge. By lap 15 he had taken the lead from James Powell and never was challenged. A lap 20 red flag for a multi car spin caused after Billy Cox's car oiled the track down, brought the field back together but no one could mount a challenge on a track now slickened with oil dry. Waters was followed across the line by Powell, point leader Kipp Posey, 73 year old J.R. Williams of Carson City, NV and Gregg Fuette.

Heat races were captured by Powell and Posey. Powell earned his first AutoTrader Fast Qualifier award with a best lap of 15.561 average speed of 86.755 mph.

The next Utah Focus Midget series race will take place at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring on July 3rd. The race is the second of 3 scheduled Utah-California joint events. Temperatures are expected to reach 110 degrees, a break from last years 121 degrees. The Utah Focus Midgets will return to RMR on July 5th.
